  • February 26: General Membership Meeting

Are you a notary public or do you intend to obtain a notary commission in the future? Do any of the attorneys with whom you work intend to obtain a notary commission? As you probably know, attorneys have lifetime notary commissions because they are attorneys, but non-attorneys like we paralegals must renew our designations every five years.

Many aspects of the notary commission in Ohio are about to change. SB 263 was recently passed by the Ohio Legislature, and it will become fully effective on September 20, 2019. There are other provisions of this statute that will be implemented on March 19th, and still additional mandates effective in July before the entire statute is enacted in September. This new law will impact both non-attorney notaries (you) as well as attorneys.

One of the major changes is a provision for remote / electronic online notarizing of documents. It entails new and additional requirements, including, among others, completion of a course of instruction approved by the Secretary of State and passing an examination based on the course.

For attorneys who have not yet obtained their notary commission, the new law will require them to complete a notary course prior to obtaining a lifetime notary commission. Under existing law, Ohio attorneys receive a lifetime notary commission at the time of application with no notary education, exam or background check required. That will no longer be the protocol.

This is important information that all paralegals and attorneys need to be aware of and prepared for. In that effort, we are pleased to welcome Jill Snitcher McQuain, Executive Director of the Columbus Bar Association, to speak to us about this topic at our General Membership meeting on Tuesday, February 26, 2019. We will gather at the CBAs offices and begin the meeting at noon. All PACO members are welcome to attend, and please feel free to invite your attorneys as well!

Paralegals who attend will earn one hour of CLE credit. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide CLE credit for attorneys.

Please click here to register. If you are unable to attend in person, you may indicate so when you register by selecting the option to participate remotely, which is a terrific service provided and facilitated to PACO by Anderson Reporting. If you are planning to attend in person, you may indicate that as well when you register. Lunch will be provided at the meeting.
